A couple of years ago, a friend asked me if I wanted to take a SUP class. Honestly? I was a little nervous. Let’s just say, water sports have never come naturally to me, and I HATE getting water up my nose. 😅

But I said yes anyway. And I’m SO glad I did. I had such a blast and instantly knew I’d be doing more of it.

Less than a year later, after lots of research and guidance from the Gorge Performance staff, I bought my own SUP. I was looking for a SUP that would grow with me, deliver excellent performance, and not break the budget.

While Fanatic provided me with two paddleboards for this review, I purchased my initial board myself, and all opinions are my own.

I landed on the Fanatic Ray Air, which was the perfect fit. It tracks easily, and I can easily relax on the water OR pick up the pace when I want to move fast.

Paddleboarding has quickly become one of my favorite ways to recharge in the summer. Whether I head out for a mellow, leisurely paddle or plan to make it into a solid workout, I always feel relaxed and content after a couple of hours on the water.

The only downside? The rest of the family started wanting to “borrow” my board every time we went to the lake or river.

Truthfully though? I kind of love it. As our kids enter their tween years, finding activities we all enjoy together seems even more important.

So this year, we decided to add two more Fanatic SUPs to our quiver so we can all paddleboard together (and, let’s be honest – so I don’t have to share). 😝

Wondering if the Ray Air is the best inflatable touring SUP for you? To help you decide, in this Fanatic paddleboard review, I share our personal experience with these two models as well as research and details we’ve learned about other SUPs in the Fanatic lineup.

When shopping, some of the criteria I was looking for were:

  • A company with a solid reputation in the water sports industry instead of an unknown brand from a big box store
  • Quality construction at a reasonable value. I want our paddleboards to last us years with proper care.
  • Because I already felt comfortable on a SUP, I was looking for an option that would add the ability for longer paddles, increased speed, and glide.

And while we haven’t tested every model on the market, I can say that we’ve personally tried two models of paddleboards from Fanatic, including the standard Ray Air (in two sizes) and the Ray Air Pocket and we’ve been extremely happy with our choice.

Where to Buy Fanatic Paddleboards

Fanatic Paddleboards can be found at many surf and outdoor sports stores worldwide. We’re always huge fans of shopping with your local core shop. You’ll find unmatched advice and it helps to keep our favorite sports alive. You can find a complete directory of dealers listed on the Fanatic website or check with these retailers located in the Pacific Northwest:

Alternatively, another West Coast shop to check out is:

Don’t see a shop near you? Luckily Fanatic is a worldwide brand with many shops in multiple countries. Check out the dealer locator to find one close to you!

Which Fanatic Ray Air Model is Best?

Choosing the correct inflatable Fanatic Ray Air paddleboard model depends on your particular situation and needs.

If you’re looking for an inflatable touring SUP at a reasonable price? We suggest the Ray Air (Pure Edition). It comes in two sizes so you can choose the one that best fits your needs.

Want a lightweight paddleboard you can hike with to alpine lakes? We recommend the Fanatic Ray Air Pocket.

And if you’re looking for the most durable option and increased size to handle more gear (or a kid), you want the Fanatic Ray Air Premium. It has three size options, including a 13’6″ option with an extra luggage area on the rear of the board.

All of the Fanatic inflatable sup boards we’re reviewing in this post are intended as touring boards. Looking for an all-round board instead? Check out the Fly Air or the Fly Air Premium.

If you’re in a hurry, here’s a breakdown of three of the most popular Ray Air models from Fanatic. But if you have a little more time, keep reading for additional details on each model and more information on the other options in their lineup.

Overview & Unique Features of Fanatic Inflatable Paddleboards

Though hard paddleboards are excellent options and even preferred in many situations, they are more challenging to store and transport. And I can confidently say I won’t be carrying one on a hike. 😅

Because inflatable SUPs use air to create the rigidity you need to glide across the water, they are lighter, easier to transport and store, and more practical for many users. For example, as a family of four, transporting four hardboards would be very challenging, but we can easily toss all our inflatables in the back of our car. In addition, our 12-year-old is now even able to carry one on his own for short distances.

What makes Fanatic SUPs different?

Fanatic has been a name in water sports for decades. Founded in 1981, they proved to be leaders in windsurfing and foiling and later added stand-up paddleboards to their lineup.

When you purchase inflatable paddle boards from Fanatic, you get all those decades of experience, research, and development in a quality board that delivers on performance. In addition, here are some other things you can expect from Fanatic.

Commitment to Sustainability

Fanatic has been taking strides for years to reduce its impact on the climate, including reducing and even eliminating plastic packaging, utilizing renewable energy, and creating incentives for employees who travel to work by bike instead of car.  Read more about their commitment to sustainability here.

Innovation & Technology

Fanatic is a sup company that has proven its dedication to innovation and improvement in technology over the years as one of the best global brands for water sports. They continue to use top-quality materials and find ways to create high-performing, durable boards for various applications.

Each inflatable Fanatic SUP starts with its V-Drop Stitch Core, which provides a lightweight drop stitch construction that is both durable and affordable. Learn more about the technology in their boards here.

Packages and Pricing

New in 2022, Fanatic now offers packages available WITH a leash and paddle from select dealers at a 30% discount. This is an excellent way to grab yourself a full setup of high-quality SUP gear at a reduced cost!

My favorite part of this new pricing structure? You can get an entire paddleboard setup for less than the standard list price making it a no-brainer!

However, each retailer is able to decide exactly what is in their package, so keep in mind you may find slight variations on package contents and pricing from store to store.

Already have a paddle you love? No worries! You can still buy the boards on their own as well.

Design & Function

The Fanatic Ray Air is a great board. It was my first purchase from the Fanatic SUP range, and I’ve been thrilled with the quality and performance. It comes in two colorways, Red and Blue, and is designed to balance stability and maneuverability. The large, removable center fin is easy to insert and position without needing tools and aids in tracking and maneuverability.

Personally, I have felt stable on the Ray Air from day one. However, you will have less stability on any touring board than on an all-around paddleboard. It has incredible stiffness for an inflatable SUP and is a dream to ride on flat water. I’ve been able to tolerate small waves without difficulty.

However, it’s important to remember that choosing the proper size SUP for your body weight and skill levels can make a huge difference. For instance, when I first got my 11’6″ Ray Air, my husband, John, found it challenging. He is within the recommended weight range but is approaching the upper end of the scale. But as soon as he sized up to the 12’6″ for his own paddleboard, he no longer felt unstable.

The deck pad on the Ray Air utilizes diamond grooving, which is cushioned but still provides excellent grip, so you don’t feel like you’re standing on a slip ‘n slide.

Portability

All inflatable paddleboards are relatively portable, and the Fanatic Ray Air is no different. In fact, we have trekked approximately 8 miles round trip with my 11’6″ version. I carried our hiking supplies, and John carried the SUP. It was doable but not exactly comfortable with the included backpack.

Available Sizes

The Fanatic Ray Air comes in two different sizes – 11’6″ x 31″ (299 L) and 12’6″ x 32″ (339 L).

The 11’6″ x 31″ weighs in at a little over 18 lbs (8.3 kg) and is recommended for users up to 240 pounds (110 kg).

The 12’6″ x 32″ weighs in at a little over 19 lbs (8.9 kg) and is recommended for users up to 260 pounds (120 kg).

Fanatic Ray Air Pocket Review

Next up in our Fanatic Ray Air paddleboard review is the Pocket. The Fanatic Ray Air Pocket is an ultra-portable SUP designed for travel and trekking longer distances from the parking lot. Personally, I know we will use it most to hike to lakes I wouldn’t otherwise bring a SUP. 🙌

Most Portable
Fanatic Ray Air Pocket
List $849; Package pricing starts as low as $705

The Fanatic Ray Air Pocket is ideal for those who want high-performance in a small package.

Highlights:
  • Best for paddlers looking to travel with their SUP or hike to alpine lakes.
  • Weighs 8.5 kg (<19 lbs)
  • Rolls into a smaller, more ergonomic, high-quality backpack for easy carrying
Pros:
  • Easy to pump with included two-stage pump
  • Deck net (bungee storage) on the nose
  • A smaller, lighter deck pad provides soft grip while reducing weight
  • Sleek design & bright colors
  • Two click-in fins
  • Rolls into a compact size for ultimate portability and space savings
  • Two PVC rail layers & drop stitch core
  • Includes easy entry pocket backpack and two-stage manual pump
  • Packages with safety leash and paddle now available from select dealers at a discount.
Cons:
  • Click-in fins, while highly convenient, may be easier to lose
  • While the bag is half the size of standard bags, it is still tall for shorter users
  • Only one size option

Design & Function

The Fanatic Ray Air Pocket is based on the same shape as the Ray Air. It brings a great mix of glide, stability, and maneuverability in a portable package. I do find the Ray Air Pocket to feel a little less stable than the same size in the standard Ray Air. However, that is likely due to the difference in fins.

Instead of a single center fin, the Ray Air Pocket utilizes two 4.5″ side fins. These fins are super convenient and click into place in just a few seconds. Unfortunately, I lost one on my second or third outing, and I’m still unsure why. It could have been that I didn’t get it fully seated, or it may have gotten bumped on the dock getting out of the water. I’d suggest grabbing an extra to have on hand just in case and taking a few extra seconds to double-check everything before hitting the water.

In terms of options, the Ray Air Pocket only comes in one choice of colors, but it’s my favorite color combo in the Ray Air line!

Portability

The Fanatic Ray Air Pocket fits into a compact bag approximately half the size of other paddleboard bags, making carrying much more comfortable. In addition, the bag is designed for easy entry, making it easy to load after your paddle. Because of the thinner deck pad and flexible construction, the Ray Air Pocket can roll into a much smaller space than other boards of the same size.

Available Sizes

The Fanatic Ray Air Pocket comes in one size – 11’6″ x 31″ (299 L). It weighs in at just under 18 lbs (8.5 kg) and is recommended for users up to 220 pounds (100 kg).

Fanatic Ray Air Premium Review

Next up in our Fanatic Ray Air paddleboard review is the Premium version. The Fanatic Ray Air Premium takes the same shape and design from the Ray Air up a notch. It is the perfect choice if you’re looking for additional durability, the ability to tackle longer tours, or carrying extra baggage (or children 😆).

Increased Durability
Fanatic Ray Air Premium

  • Double-layer light technology welds a second PVC layer to the core for lightweight durability

Design & Function

One of the options I like most on the Ray Air Premium is the 13’6″ size option with eyelets to attach an additional bungee cord on the tail. You’ll also get a click-in center fin and an upgraded wheely backpack to make transport easier.

The Premium model utilizes the best inflatable construction in the Ray Air lineup with Double Layer Light Technology, giving you increased stiffness while reducing weight.

In addition, the Premium board gives you a mast base insert so that you have the option of windsurfing as well.

Portability

Though the Fanatic Ray Air Premium weighs more than other models, the included wheely backpack makes it much easier to move around.

Available Sizes

The Fanatic Ray Air Premium comes in three sizes – 11’6″ x 31″ (299 L), 12’6″ x 32″ (339 L), and 13’6″ x 35″ (400 L).

The 11’6″ x 31″ weighs in at a little over 24 lbs (10.95 kg) and is recommended for users up to 240 pounds (110 kg).

The 12’6″ x 32″ weighs in at a little over 27 lbs (12.25 kg) and is recommended for users up to 260 pounds (120 kg).

The 13’6″ x 35″ weighs in at a little over 32 lbs (14.65 kg) and is recommended for users up to approximately 285 pounds (120 kg).

Final Thoughts on Fanatic Paddleboards

When looking for quality construction, the best inflatable technology, and a convenient answer to limited storage, the Fanatic range of inflatable SUPs is an excellent choice. Our Fanatic boards have been the perfect solution and have provided us with a lot of fun as a family.

If there was anything I could improve anything about the Ray Air models, it would be these two things:

  • I’d love to see an additional bungee option on the rear of all models. Especially when paddle boarding with kids, that extra space would be handy!
  • The center handle works great for my husband and me, but our kids sometimes need help carrying it, and extra handles on the ends would be a game-changer.

At the end of the day, when shopping for outdoor gear, we look for premium quality and performance that can meet our demands, and Fanatic delivers with flying colors.

FAQs

Is Fanatic a good SUP brand?

Fanatic paddleboards are made with high-quality construction and durability in mind. Their inflatable SUPs are one of the best quality options available.

Who is the Fanatic Ray Air best for?

The Ray Air from Fanatic is best for those who need the space savings of an inflatable, but don’t want to skimp on performance. The high-quality construction and impressive stiffness allow it to glide easily through the water.

In addition, we think it’s a great choice for those newer to paddleboarding who prefer a SUP that can grow with them. The touring shape of the Ray Air allows you to still pick up speed when you want, but it is still stable enough for newer riders.

Can I buy replacement fins for Fanatic?

You sure can! You can find replacement fins on the Fanatic website. You can also check with your local board or surf shop as they may stock replacement fins from Fanatic or compatible brands.
