Looking for the best ski and snow resorts in the Pacific Northwest? In this post, we’re going to share the winter resorts that frequently are at the top of the list for families and adventurers to visit.

Maybe you’re looking for ski & snowboard resorts near Portland or Seattle, or simply want to go snow tubing at a family resort. Whether you’re searching for a fun weekend activity, a spring break destination, or planning where to snowboard or ski next Christmas, these winter resorts in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and British Columbia are the best around the PNW.

Considerations for 2021-2022 Winter Season

When planning your trip to a winter resort during the 2021-2022 season, we encourage you to check the website of each resort prior to heading out. Things are looking much better than last season, however, updates and changes may happen rapidly. Some resorts will still have guidelines related to the pandemic similar to last season, but many others will be lifting restrictions. Here are a few things you may want to prepare:

  • Limited capacity inside lodges and buildings.
  • Reduced or limited amenities, including potential changes to lessons and childcare.
  • Reservations required: Some resorts may require you to reserve your ticket in advance, even if you have a pass, to limit capacity.
  • Required masks and increased hand washing and sanitizing requirements.
  • Temperature checks.
  • 6 foot distance between household groups in lift lines.
  • Chair lift rides with your immediate group only.
  • More outdoor eating spaces or eating at your vehicle or room, if staying nearby.
  • Potential closures.

Keep in mind that this is not an exhaustive list and that each resort may run things differently. We realize that a lot of the changes that remain in place this year are going to be inconvenient, and maybe even a little annoying. But, try to be as understanding and cooperative as you can for the resorts and staff that are doing their best to keep everyone healthy, follow guidelines, and stay open to keep us shredding!

Pricing Breakdowns

As far as pricing goes, due to operating costs and being purchased by larger companies, a lot of resorts have seen significant increases in pricing over the last few years.

We want to help you avoid the sticker shock at the ticket window, so here’s how we’re breaking it down. Pricing can vary on different days & times, but we will use the following reference chart to help you compare.

$Weekend Single-Day Adult Lift Ticket Under $75
$$Weekend Single-Day Adult Lift Ticket $75-$100
$$$Weekend Single-Day Adult Lift Ticket $100-$125
$$$$Weekend Single-Day Adult Lift Ticket $125-150
$$$$$Weekend Single-Day Adult Lift Ticket $150+

General Tips

  • Most of these resorts, especially the larger ones, will have busy parking lots and lines on the weekends. It’s not uncommon for cars to get turned away or have to drive down the mountain and grab a shuttle back up if you don’t arrive early. Carpool whenever possible, and go early!
  • Purchasing your pass online ahead of time will generally save you some money.
  • Multi-day passes are often your best bet for saving cash. However, that said, if your particular dates aren’t peak days, you may get a better deal purchasing individually.
  • You may even want to consider purchasing a season pass if you know you’ll be spending an extended amount of time or can make multiple trips.
  • If you plan to take a lesson and get rentals, make sure you check for packages that include both. A lot of resorts will have this available at a discounted rate.
  • Sometimes you can also find less stressful and less expensive rentals at your local board shop. For instance, a few years ago, when the boys were just starting out, we rented an entire snowboard set up from Sturtevants in Tacoma for around $170 – for the entire season! Their current daily rate is right around $30. The biggest bonus? We weren’t standing in those massive lines for rental gear when we got to the mountain. Other options for rentals in the Pacific Northwest are: evo, Next Adventure, Mountain Shop, and Motion Boardshop.
  • Speaking of those massive rental lines, the earlier you get to the mountain, the less time you’ll waste. At one of our favorite mountains, if you get to rentals on the weekend by about 8:30 or so, you’ll only wait a few minutes, if at all. Show up at 9? You’ll find a line that wraps through the rental area, down the hall, and sometimes backs up the stairway. So, keep your timing in mind if you need to get your gear on site.
  • Already have a season pass at another resort? Check your benefits to see if they offer discounts through their sister resorts or pass collaboratives such as the Powder Alliance.
  • Looking for other pass options for multiple resorts? Check out the Epic Pass, Indy Pass, or Ikon Pass. Depending on where your home base is, these passes can be a killer deal, giving you access to riding at some of the country’s best and largest resorts…especially if you love visiting more than one home mountain during the season.

Indy Pass

Though a season pass or multi-day pass can be a great way to save a little cash, you’re typically limited to a single resort. Enter Indy Pass.

Indy Pass has partnered with 119 (and growing) independent partner resorts across North America for the 2022-2023 season for one VERY reasonable price.

Seriously.

For less than it would cost for a single adult season pass at most resorts, our entire family of four can ALL have their own Indy Pass and get 2 days at each of the partner resorts. Need to save a little extra? Pre-season pricing ends November 30 and is a great way to keep as much cash in your pocket as possible.

I know there can still be some trepidation about large purchases right now. Thankfully, Indy Pass also offers Pass Protection for only $30 – and it’s a lot better than other protection passes we’ve seen that essentially limit the protection to catastrophic events keeping you off the snow the entire season. With Indy Pass, their coverage gives you a full refund for up to one year with no questions asked (if you haven’t used your pass, that is). You can read all the details here.

Oregon Ski & Snowboarding Resorts

Oregon is home to some of the best skiing and snowboarding in the Pacific Northwest and is one of the few places in the world that you can actually ride all year long. If you prefer smaller ski resorts, we suggest checking out Hoodoo or Mt. Hood Skibowl. And, if big mountains are more your style, Meadows, Timberline, and Mount Bachelor are going to be the best resorts for you.

They have two beginner areas, the First Rays Carpet and the Woodward Start Park, for your kids (and you) as you’re just getting started. Best part? It’s totally free, so when your 4-year-old decides he’s done after 30 minutes, you don’t feel like you just threw away your money.

Then, once it’s time for the next step, they also provide a Progression Ticket at a significantly discounted rate for a handful of lifts to get you started going further up the mountain. How cool is that?!

For better or worse, Mt. Bachelor has added a new Fast Tracks “Upgradeable Experience” to their offerings this year. Starting at $49, you can upgrade your lift ticket to bypass the lift line. In addition, you can upgrade your parking premium parking spaces ranging from $10-40 depending on the day.
